Siim Heering is a versatile engineer from a multi-generational engineering background. His primary focus in engineering is unmanned aviation. Heering works as a junior researcher in simulation and experimental technologies in the Estonian Aviation Academy’s Department of Aeronautical Engineering. He is engaged in the design, development, manufacturing, and practical implementation of structures, systems, and control algorithms for unmanned aerial, water, and ground vehicles.
In addition to his outstanding engineering work, Heering has actively contributed to advancing science and education in the field. He is deeply involved in teaching, mentoring, and research. He is a member of several research groups at the Academy, a supervisor for international student engineering projects and theses, and a lecturer. Through his activities, Heering inspires young people to address practical problems in science and technology, serving as a role model for the next generation of engineers. He himself is a graduate of the Academy, having completed the Aircraft Engineering programme in 2013. He also holds a master’s degree in Mechatronics from Tallinn University of Technology and is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Tartu’s Institute of Technology.
“This is a tremendous recognition and honor to have my work in the field of engineering acknowledged,” said Heering. He added that the award motivates him to continue his efforts and hopes it will encourage more young people to pursue an interest in engineering.
The Engineer of the Year and Engineering Student of the Year are selected by the board of the Estonian Association of Engineers from candidates submitted to the competition. This year, the Engineering Student of the Year title was awarded to Daniil Valme, a doctoral student in Electrical Power Engineering and Mechatronics at TalTech.
